Fleetwood Mac - Thrown Down

Thrown Down by Fleetwood Mac

The seductive Lindsey Buckingham riff leads you in...

The arrangement dazzles....

.... and then you're spinning in a mysterious Stevie Nicks spider-web.

From 'Say You Will' (2003).

Magma - Mekanik Kommandoh (Live 2006)

This one's for Zach, because he told me once he didn't like "fusion".

Here I present science-fiction fusion.

This is the mighty Magma, French progressive rock fusion band from the '70s. They are performing here in 2006.

The choir are singing in a made-up alien language called Kobaïan. Over the course of many years, Magma's albums - sung in the language of Kobaïan - told a lengthy and complicated science-fiction saga, with themes of ecology and spirtituality.

The bear-like dude on drums is Christian Vander, the leader of the group, the genius behind the band, and its incredible drummer.

The bald dude on bass in the leather vest just happens to have one of the greatest names in music: Jannick Top.

These people are music legends in France.

They call this 'Zeuhl Music'.

I call it simply fantastik.

John Lydon/Steve Jones interview - The Late Late Show

Lydon is absolutely irrepressible. A really extraordinary fellow. "I'm fat, fifty and I'm back!"

John Fogerty & Friends - Proud Mary

"Tina, eat your heart out!"

Not even Taj Mahal's unfortunate clapping can ruin this video of Fogerty with an all star band, in 1987, breaking his vow never to perform Creedence songs again. It was all apparently at Bob Dylan's insistence, who warned him, "if you don't start singing Proud Mary, everybody's gonna think it's a Tina Turner song".

Even Dylan is seen applauding at the end.

Bruce Springsteen - Frankie

Frankie by Bruce Springsteen

From Tracks Box Set (1998).

Like an old fairground ride (at Coney Island?). The feeling is familiar and nostalgic, yet full of surprises.... the smell of wood chip and sea air.

Bruce found the secret to the universe in the engine of an old parked car, and I feel like the secret to Bruce might be in these seven and a half minutes.

Simple Minds - Belfast Child

Bought as a 12 inch in 1989.

Rediscovered this year, as part of the far northern outpost of current Simple Minds obsession.

Get past the two-verse intro, and listen for the brilliant change at 2:15. Then it's all aboard...
And visually, Kerr's dramatic hand-gesturing completes the grandiose picture.

One of the good things about getting older if you listen to music is you can ignore any baggage attached to bands/videos/songs, and just appreciate them for what they are.

"Won't you come back, Billy? You been gone so long..."

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Jerusalem

Jerusalem by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

From "Brain Salad Surgery" (1973)

Keith Emerson's keyboard fills sounded really good driving east on the blvd late this evening.
Maybe they'll sound really good wherever you are too.

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Heavy Music (Live)

From the album "Live Bullet" (1976)

Seger and the boys in their prime really knew how to work a hometown crowd. Probably still do.

Watch out for the abrupt ending - on the actual album it segues...

Randy Newman - Only A Girl

Only A Girl by Randy Newman

I couldn't resist posting another track from the new Randy Newman album. As with many of his songs, you have to wait for a lyric/tone shift around half-way, and a sting in the tail, for the twisted genius to reveal itself.
